2017 Special Projects Curator: Dr. Zoe Whitely

FNB JoburgArtFair is delighted to announce Dr. Zoe Whitely as the 2017 Guest Curator of Special Projects. Whitley will direct special programming for the 10th anniversary edition 7-10 September, 2017.

Dr. Zoe Whitley is a Research Curator at Tate Modern in London. She co-wrote Tate’s revised Africa acquisitions strategy and researches contemporary artists and art practices across the African continent and the African diaspora. She is co-curator of Tate Modern’s 2017 exhibition Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power (12 July – 22 October 2017). Among numerous published texts, Zoe has contributed to the South Africa pavilion’s 57th Venice Biennale catalogue. Based in London, previous posts include Curator, Contemporary British Art at Tate Britain (2013-2015), guest curator at the Studio Museum in Harlem (2013-2014) and Curator, Contemporary Programmes at the V&A (2005-2013).

Curating this special project for the FNB JoburgArtFair is both a personal pleasure and a professional honour. Johannesburg is for me one of the world’s great cities, historically rich and culturally vibrant. My own introduction to Joburg several years ago came in particular through so many of the city’s artists generously allowing me to spend time in their studios, in their neighbourhoods and in their homes. Experiencing the world through the eyes of the artist is to be celebrated. As the art fair marks its 10th anniversary, I wish to acknowledge artists in South Africa for their perspectives on recent history and their commitment to place- making.
